Questions And Answers On Cures For Heartburn

Bob asks…

What are some effective herbal cures for heartburn and indigestion?

What are some some mostly surefire and effective herbal cures for heartburn and indigestion. I am not interested in merely managing it .. but “fixing” it if I can.

Be sure to include a disclaimer in you answer stating that you are not offering unlicensed medical advice. I too, will admit that I realize that your “hearsay” does not promote constitute or claim a cure. The FDA and the medical establishment is understandably paranoid about herbs that might really work.

Jim asks…

Is it really possible to cure heartburn?

I’ve been reading that there is no permanent solution for heartburn problems. Is it really serious to have heartburn?

remedy answers:

Stop eating greasy and chilly/spicy food. Don’t go without food for long hours, that causes acidity. Have milk regularly.Avoid heavy dinners. Eat early and have a healthy snack before bed eg fruits/yogurt.
If problems persist, see a doc.

Susan asks…

Is there a natural way to cure heartburn?

Like, without going to the store and buying medicine for it.
Anything I might have at home already?

remedy answers:

Heartburn is the sensation one feels when gastric acid in the stomach flows back to the esophagus thereby burning its lining. The burning sensation is located somewhere near the location of the heart hence the term “heartburn”.

Gastric acid builds up in the stomach after eating a meal to help digest the food coming into it.

When one is standing up, the natural flow of food is to go down from the mouth to the throat through the esophagus and into the stomach, etc. However, when one lies down after a meal or while the food is being digested, the gastric juices sometimes flow back into the esophagus.

There are several ways to temporarily relieve the sensation of heartburn but not cure heartburn, which are to take medications to reduce the acidity in the esophagus and/or stomach, or deaden the nerves near it enough so as not to cause discomfort. However, these are temporary solutions and may have to be a maintenance thing (meaning: you have to take medications for it every time).

However there is a way to prevent it from happening. Do not lie down at least 30 minutes after a meal, and a least 1 hour after a heavy meal (meat). Meats require a lot of gastric juices to digest so plan to eat at least for period of time sufficiently enough for digestion to occur before lying down. But if you are tired and need to lie down, do try to lie on your ride side. The esophagus in the human anatomy is shaped like a curved “C”. So that when you lie on your right side, food flows down from the esophagus into the stomach. Lying down on your left side would bring the acid from the heavier stomach down back to the esophagus.

There is also a preventive measure, which is to avoid food that may affect the sphincter muscle to relax the opening between the stomach and esophagus, such as chocolate, peppermint, and chamomile tea shortly before bedtime (source: Wikipedia). Also do try to avoid very spicy foods as spices specially hot peppers can paralyze the sphincter muscles and cause it not to contract when gastric juices are returning from the stomach back into the esophagus (other medical sources).

Alana asks…

how to fine a cure heartburn or acid congestion?

HI I’ll like to find a cure for heartburn or acid congestion. I have take a lot of over counter medicine but none of them have help me. I’ll really appreciate if you can help. on telling me how to get a cure for my problem.

remedy answers:

Acid congestion, indigestion, and heartburn come from a lack of stomach acids. Once the body identifies this it tries to over compensate and makes a pool of acids that can reflux into the esophagus. Over the counter medicine stops the production of stomach acid for a period of time causing a flood of stomach acids to be produced once the medicine wears off to better digest food. These medicines can take up to 12-24 hours to completely work. Try a tablespoon of vinegar and see how that works before trying over the counter products. This should replace the acids in your stomach naturally stopping the heartburn within an hour. Unless there is something medically wrong you should be quite pleased with the results.

Daniel asks…

Can i cure Heartburn by Apple Cider Vinegar?

Dear all, I am Nabin from Nepal, and i am suffering from GERD. Can i take ACV for treatment? Is this safe for treatment? What are it’s side effects? Please tell me who are special in this sector. Don’t frighten me.
Thanks

remedy answers:

Hi, ACV is not a panacea that will cure all illnesses, but for GERD it is certainly worth a try. My GI doctor diagnosed me with gastritis after an endoscopy. I had been complaining of stomach pain for many months. Acid cider vinegar cured my condition. ACV is also known for relieving or curing acid reflux. The following link is my favorite ACV link: http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/acvinegar.html. Also look at http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/acid_reflux.html

If you want a huge google link, check out http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=0h&oq=apple&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS336US336&q=apple+cider+vinegar+health+benefits.

I can’t offer any guarantees, but I think ACV is worth a try. At the time of my gastritis, I was taking one tablespoon of ACV plus one tablespoon of honey in 8 ounces of water. I did this twice a day. You might to try more ACV for acid reflux. Other people have different routines and amounts of ingesting ACV.

Now I take ACV on a daily basis. I was on a prescription medication that made me gain about 20 pounds. With the ACV, I lost about 20 pounds (with no other changes to my diet). I now take about 2 tablespoons in a few ounces of water and don’t even bother with the honey anymore.

Using a certain method, I even used ACV externally to remove a wart on my leg. There is info on that on earthclinic.com.

It is important to use raw, unfiltered ACV from a health food store. I don’t know what brands are available in Nepal. The best brands in the U.S. Are Braggs, WholeFoods, and Spectrum. You can google these companies and also google amazon.com and find out if they ship to Nepal.

Avoid grocery store ACV or capsules of ACV in drug stores that are sometimes touted as weight loss cures. I wish you success.

Mandy asks…

How come doctors don’t advise patients of Natural cures?

For example: Apple cider cures heartburn, grapefruit seed extract cures some infections, peppermint oil for headaches….etc.

remedy answers:

Because doctors are taught to critically appraise the scientific literature and these ‘natural cures’ just don’t work beyond the placebo effect.

In response to the ‘natural health student’ above, I can’t speak for medical students but in schools of pharmacy we actually are taught about natural remedies – including the flimsy at best evidence base supporting their use. For example, St. John’s Wort has been shown in a few studies to have some effect on mild to moderate depression, while there is no evidence to show that ginseng has any benefits to health.

Just to clarify: when I say there is no evidence I don’t mean that studies haven’t been done. I mean that in studies the substance in question performed no better than a placebo.

It’s important that healthcare professionals know about natural remedies so they can advise patients properly. And it’s completely untrue to say that the only reason healthcare professionals are mostly against the use of such products is that they get more money from conventional medicines – many herbal remedies and food supplements are extortionately expensive (and can be bought at almost all pharmacies, not that I agree with it).

natural heartburn cures?

does anyone know of a natural no meds cure for heartburn/gerd I’ve tried apple cider vineger its nasty! any help please thank you
its actually more of acid reflux i get a little dizzy / harder to breath and lately its been like someone is pressing on my throat a little its a little harder to swallow

remedy answers:

I was bothered for years with this before (finally!) finding a cure. GNC carries something called “MAXMatch”. It’s derived from the dengyata tree, specific to southern Africa. A bottle of 30 capsules will cost you about $5. Works like a charm! Good luck!
